That's an interesting point. Talking about 'atmospheric music' makes the assumption that we know what the atmosphere is. By definition ALL music is atmospheric in my opinion - as one definition of the word is "Intended to evoke a particular emotional tone or aesthetic quality"
So why is Lacuna Coil more 'atmospheric' than say Hatebreed? Well I think it's all about another definition of the word " Resembling or representing the atmosphere; having or giving the effect of translucence" Translucence. It's suggests a diffusion of light or imagery, and musically I think LC have managed this. The music is multilayered and there's lots going on; even now i hear new things in songs I've heard dozens of times.
There is also a dreamlike quality about the music - added I suspect by Cristina's beautiful voice.
When I close my eyes and listen to Lacuna Coil I envision complex images, not all of them clear, sometimes through a fog, or just out of sight. There's sometime a glow, or light - a translucence.

It all adds up to Lacuna Coil being 'atmospheric' music. In my opinion of course!

Matt took the words right out of my mouth. In almost all of their songs, it feels like the music is beautifully overlapping itself. When I first started listening to them (not very long ago) I was amazed by the sheer quantity of notes, instruments, voices, everything.

I agree Matt. It's amazing how, after listening to them for so long, you can pick up new bits and pieces every once in a while... and just say, "Where'd that come from?" lol. Quite nice it is.

HUM has a kind of atmospheric sound to them as well... sometimes, new pieces will just pop out at me... it all blends so well...

Perhaps that's why I consider these two bands to be my favourites? Because they give me a sort of musical "high" ....

I agree adding clean or angelic female vocals really makes something atmospheric. Add a clean female vocalist and Deicide could be atmospheric.

yeah the keyboards and sampling play a big part in making Lacuna Coil atmospheric, but i think that the icing on the cake is Cristina's angelic vocals
